US Commerce Secretary Praises Canada’s Digital Tax Withdrawal

Date:

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has publicly thanked the Canadian government for withdrawing its digital services tax, a move he says “was intended to stifle American innovation.” His comments underscore the US administration’s relief and credit to President Trump for the policy shift.
The controversial tax, set to target the Canadian revenues of major US technology companies, had been a significant irritant for President Trump, who had halted all trade discussions with Canada until it was withdrawn. The swift reversal by Ottawa demonstrates the effectiveness of this pressure.
Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that his decision was made to revive crucial trade discussions with the United States, which had been put on hold due to the dispute. The tax, initially conceived to ensure fair contributions from global tech giants, was expected to generate billions in revenue for Canada.
Lutnick’s statement, along with other administration officials, reinforces the narrative that the US successfully pressured Canada into this policy change. While it clears the path for renewed negotiations, it also prompts a broader discussion within Canada about its economic sovereignty and its ability to stand firm on its policy initiatives.
