OpenNebula Systems has launched the latest version of its cloud and virtualization software, OpenNebula 7.4, dubbed “Helix.” This update is crafted to ease enterprise cloud management while catering to the growing needs of AI infrastructure. A highlight of the release is the revamped Sunstone management interface, which promises a quicker and more user-friendly experience for cloud administrators. It introduces new features such as enhanced navigation, resource inspection capabilities, reorganized settings, and GUI-based management for VirtioFS, all aimed at optimizing everyday cloud operations.
The 7.4 version also sees significant advancements in automation, notably with OneSwap for batch VMware migrations, improved OneDRS resource scheduling, smarter datastore selection, storage migration, and enhancements to OneKS for managed Kubernetes deployments. These improvements are designed to aid organizations in modernizing their infrastructure and simplifying operational complexities.
For those engaged in AI and high-performance computing, OpenNebula 7.4 brings support for Axelera AI accelerators and native NVIDIA GPU integration within the Slurm appliance. Additionally, there’s automated orchestration of Bare Metal as a Service (BMaaS) through the NVIDIA Infrastructure Controller (NICo). Networking enhancements include VLAN Group-level authorization and support for Open vSwitch Switchdev, which boost performance and ensure secure multi-tenant environments.
The update also reinforces backup and data protection through revisions to the OpenNebula Backup Exporter (OneBEX), introducing features like Selected Disk Backups and production-ready support for Ubuntu 26.04. Other improvements span storage, monitoring, networking, high availability, and VMware compatibility, broadening the platform’s utility and reliability.
Additionally, OpenNebula Systems has rolled out OpenNebula Apps (OneApps) 7.4.0. This includes updated virtual appliances, AArch64 support for OneKS, compatibility with Alpine Linux 3.24, and enhancements in deployment for enterprise cloud settings.
