Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is working to establish a nationwide consensus with state and territory leaders on regulations for datacentre developments. This move comes amid rising concerns about the industry’s increasing electricity consumption and environmental footprint. At the upcoming national cabinet meeting, Albanese plans to advocate for legislation that sets uniform minimum standards for these facilities. The proposed measures aim to ensure datacentres bear the cost of their infrastructure, mitigate the impact on energy prices, and minimize water usage.
The initiative also emphasizes the need for new datacentre projects to evaluate their effects on nearby communities. Proposed sites should be strategically located, ensuring they are a safe distance from residential zones, educational institutions, and key agricultural or prospective housing areas. This regulatory push is timely, as Australia’s energy market operator anticipates a significant surge in datacentre electricity consumption over the next decade, largely driven by advancements in artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Projections estimate a rise in electricity usage by datacentres from around 5 terawatt-hours currently to 34 terawatt-hours by the 2035-36 period, potentially representing 13% of the nation’s total electricity consumption.
With 165 datacentres in operation and another 225 projects in the pipeline, the sector is rapidly expanding. However, the future of this growth remains uncertain, as a number of previously proposed projects have been abandoned. In parallel with these efforts, Albanese is also preparing broader legislation related to artificial intelligence. This includes measures to address copyright protections, security, safety, and skills development, aiming to ensure the Australian economy reaps the benefits of AI advancements while safeguarding creators and bolstering national security.
Despite these comprehensive plans, there is resistance from some state leaders, particularly concerning proposed renewable energy requirements for datacentres. This opposition adds a layer of complexity to the political challenge of establishing a cohesive national framework. Nonetheless, the government is committed to moving forward with these reforms, believing they are crucial for balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility and community welfare.
