Vietnam and the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) are set to enhance their cooperative efforts in several key sectors following a meeting between Vietnamese Ambassador Phạm Hùng Tâm and ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. The discussions focused on deepening ties between Hà Nội, Ho Chi Minh City, and Canberra. Ambassador Tâm expressed optimism about Barr’s forthcoming visit to Vietnam, which he believes will pave the way for increased collaboration. Key areas identified for partnership include renewable energy, innovation, education, tourism, and smart urban development.
During the talks, Ambassador Tâm proposed the creation of a friendship and cooperation agreement between Hà Nội and the ACT. This initiative is aimed at fostering long-term collaboration across multiple sectors, potentially leading to significant mutual benefits. Such an agreement would serve as a formal framework to guide future cooperative efforts and strengthen bonds between the regions.
Chief Minister Barr, who will be traveling to Vietnam for the first time, underscored the importance of the country as one of the ACT’s priority economic partners under its international engagement strategy. He welcomed the suggestion of establishing a sister-city relationship with Hà Nội, seeing it as a valuable opportunity to collaborate on initiatives such as green transition, electric transport, and renewable energy projects. These efforts are aligned with the broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
Barr also indicated his readiness to engage in public diplomacy activities during visits by senior Vietnamese leaders to Australia. This commitment reflects a mutual interest in fostering strong diplomatic and economic relations, further enhancing the strategic partnership between Vietnam and the ACT. The collaboration is expected to not only bolster economic ties but also promote cultural and educational exchanges, contributing to a robust bilateral relationship.
