The Crate Escape: Making the Carrier a Happy Place

Date:

The carrier can be a source of major stress for pets, or it can be their personal safe haven during travel. The difference lies in how you present it to them. Turning the carrier from a cage into a cozy den is one of the most important preparations you can make.
Start early and go slow. Don’t let the first time your pet sees the carrier be the day you’re shoving them into it. Introduce the carrier weeks before your trip. Leave it in your main living area with the door open. Let them explore it on their own terms, without any pressure.
Use the power of positive reinforcement. Make the carrier the place where all good things happen. Feed them their meals inside it. Toss their favorite high-value treats into the back of it. Place their most cherished toys inside. This builds a strong, positive association and teaches them that entering the carrier is a rewarding choice.
Make it comfortable. Nobody wants to stay in a hard plastic box. Line the carrier with the softest, most comfortable bedding you can find. A blanket that smells like you or their own bed can be incredibly comforting. Once they are comfortable, practice closing the door for a few seconds at a time, gradually increasing the duration. This patient approach transforms the carrier into a happy place they are willing to be in.
