Pressure Mounts, But Politicians Don’t Flinch in Shutdown Stare-Down

Date:

Despite mounting pressure from the public and the growing consequences of the government shutdown, politicians in Washington are not flinching. A high-stakes stare-down between the two parties continued on Wednesday as the Senate rejected competing funding bills, with neither side showing any sign of blinking as the crisis intensifies.
The pressure is coming from all directions. Furloughed workers are demanding action. Travelers are concerned about airport staffing shortages. And a major pressure point is approaching with the threatened missed paycheck for military personnel. Yet, this has not been enough to force a breakthrough.
The Democratic stare is focused on securing an extension of Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits. They are convinced that holding their ground is essential to prevent a healthcare crisis for 20 million Americans and believe the political pressure will eventually force Republicans to yield.
The Republican stare, led by Speaker Mike Johnson, is just as intense. They are focused on the principle of a clean funding bill and are confident that Democrats will be blamed for the shutdown’s fallout. Johnson has upped the ante with sharp personal attacks on his opponents.
In this stare-down, any sign of wavering is seen as weakness. That’s why a compromise offer was instantly dismissed and a call for talks was ignored. Until one side decides the cost of the shutdown is too high and looks away, the stalemate will continue.
