An emergency meeting of EU envoys is set for Sunday to address the escalating situation. Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa issued a statement stressing that the EU would remain united and coordinated. They argued that tariffs are counterproductive and risk undermining the essential transatlantic alliance.
The tariff threat is linked directly to the US desire to acquire Greenland. Trump announced that a 10% tariff would apply to goods from several European nations starting February 1, rising to 25% on June 1. The list of targeted countries includes major economies like Germany, France, and the UK.
In their statement, EU leaders highlighted the shared interest in Arctic peace and security. They explained that the Danish exercise was a pre-coordinated response to security needs in the region, conducted with allies. The leaders sought to decouple legitimate security maneuvers from the contentious trade threats.
The EU expressed strong solidarity with Denmark, refusing to let one member state stand alone against economic pressure.
