China Calls for Economic Diplomacy Following New Zealand’s Diplomatic Comments

Date:

China has called on certain individuals in New Zealand to refrain from making China a topic of domestic political discourse. This appeal comes in response to comments made by New Zealand’s Foreign Minister, Winston Peters, during a parliamentary debate that involved an opposition lawmaker of Chinese descent.

During a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized China’s respect for the developmental paths chosen by different nations. She reiterated China’s stance against any form of discrimination or prejudice and urged actions that would reinforce the friendship and mutual respect between the two countries.

The diplomatic tensions arose when New Zealand’s parliamentary discussions touched on issues involving China, prompting a reaction from Beijing. The remarks by Foreign Minister Peters were seen as potentially politicizing China’s role in domestic matters in New Zealand.

In response to the situation, China’s embassy in New Zealand has taken formal steps by lodging diplomatic representations with New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. This action underlines China’s concern over the incident and its desire for a resolution that maintains strong bilateral relations.
