Observing the 41st anniversary of a grim chapter in Canadian history, Prime Minister Mark Carney urged ongoing alertness to prevent terrorism, as the nation remembered the Air India Flight 182 bombing. This tragic event, one of the deadliest terrorist attacks involving Canadians, serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and an enhanced commitment to counteract violent extremism.
On June 23, 1985, the Air India Flight 182, also known as the Kanishka, was destroyed mid-air by a bomb while flying over the Atlantic near Ireland, claiming the lives of all 329 people aboard. Among the victims were 268 Canadian citizens. To honor those lost, memorial services took place in several cities across Canada including Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver, as well as in Ahakista, Ireland.
Prime Minister Carney emphasized the Canadian government’s dedication to bolstering national security frameworks, dismantling terrorist networks, and confronting all forms of violent extremism. He underscored the introduction of new legislative measures targeting hate propaganda, extremist symbols, and threats posed to communities, aiming to fortify the nation’s defense against such threats.
Remembrance ceremonies saw participation from government officials and law enforcement representatives, alongside India’s High Commissioner to Canada. The High Commissioner paid homage to the victims and stressed the significance of keeping the memory of terrorism’s consequences alive, as well as ensuring accountability for those involved in such acts.
Canadian authorities pledged to continue their collaboration with international allies in combating terrorism and safeguarding citizens.
