“Aura Farming” and “Glaze”: Social Media’s New Lexicon of Authenticity and Artifice

Date:

The 2025 Collins Dictionary list has captured the complex social dynamics of the online world with the inclusion of “aura farming” and “glaze.” These two terms, born from social media, highlight a generation’s fixation on the performance of self and the authenticity of praise.
“Aura farming,” defined as the deliberate cultivation of a charismatic persona, is the new term for personal branding. Its explosion into the mainstream, fueled by viral videos (like the “boat kid”) and celebrity adopters (like Travis Kelce), shows how “looking cool” has become a quantifiable, strategic act.
On the flip side, “glaze” has emerged as a popular term of disapproval for “excessive or undeserved praise.” It’s the word used to call out inauthenticity, fawning, and the empty flattery that defines much of influencer and celebrity culture.
Together, these words show a deep linguistic interest in the line between the real and the fake. While “aura farming” is the act of creating an artifice, “glaze” is the act of criticizing it.
These social terms were part of a list that was ultimately won by the AI term “vibe coding.” This juxtaposition is telling: our language is being pulled in two directions at once, by the AI-driven world of tech (“vibe coding,” “clanker,” “broligarchy”) and the human-driven world of social status (“aura farming,” “glaze”).
