Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced an additional $2.5 billion in economic assistance for Ukraine during a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, condemning recent Russian air attacks on Kyiv and reaffirming Canada’s support for Ukraine.
The two leaders met briefly at a Halifax-area airport, where Carney welcomed Zelensky during his stopover in Canada ahead of planned peace talks in the United States. Their meeting came a day after Russia launched missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s capital, striking residential areas and causing casualties.
Carney said the new funding would help Ukraine access further financial support from international institutions for reconstruction and economic stability. He stressed that continued support is critical in light of ongoing attacks and the humanitarian impact of the conflict.
Zelensky thanked Canada for its continued backing, calling the latest strikes evidence that Russia is not genuinely pursuing peace. He reiterated Ukraine’s commitment to defending its sovereignty and rejecting any territorial concessions.
Canada has been a strong supporter of Ukraine since the conflict began in 2022, providing military, humanitarian, and financial assistance. The newly announced funds are expected to strengthen Ukraine’s energy security, support reconstruction efforts, and reinforce international financial backing.
Following their public remarks, the two leaders held a private bilateral meeting and participated in discussions with other allied nations focused on coordinated support for Ukraine and future peace efforts.
