YouTube Becomes Exclusive Global Home for Academy Awards Ceremony

Date:

Digital streaming claims another major victory over traditional broadcasting as YouTube secures exclusive worldwide rights to the Academy Awards. This four-year partnership beginning in 2029 represents one of entertainment’s most significant distribution shifts, relocating Hollywood’s most prestigious ceremony from network television to a digital platform with unprecedented global reach and accessibility.
The partnership’s comprehensive scope extends throughout the entire awards season and beyond. YouTube gains exclusive rights to red carpet coverage, behind-the-scenes content, Governors Ball access, the Governors Awards ceremony, nomination announcements, the nominees Luncheon, Student Academy Awards, Academy member interviews, filmmaker conversations, film education programs, podcasts, and additional year-round programming. This extensive content package transforms the Oscar experience from a single-night event into sustained year-round engagement with Academy initiatives.
Academy executives expressed enthusiasm about expanded global accessibility through this partnership. Bill Kramer and Lynette Howell Taylor emphasized their organization’s international character and the importance of reaching worldwide audiences. With international voting members now comprising 21% of the Academy, this digital distribution strategy aligns with organizational demographics while benefiting both members and the broader filmmaking community through enhanced accessibility and engagement opportunities.
YouTube CEO Neal Mohan welcomed the opportunity to serve as steward for one of entertainment’s most cherished institutions. He emphasized commitment to honoring the Oscars’ storied legacy while inspiring new generations of filmmakers and cinema enthusiasts through innovative digital experiences. This balanced approach recognizes that successful cultural preservation requires embracing new technologies and distribution methods while respecting established traditions and values.
The entertainment landscape continues its dramatic transformation toward streaming dominance, providing context for this announcement. YouTube achieved record American viewership shares throughout the current year, consistently outperforming traditional television networks. The platform’s successful live NFL broadcast in September attracted over 17 million viewers, validating its capabilities for major live event production. Multiple major media companies reportedly competed for these broadcasting rights, including Netflix, NBCUniversal, and Disney, which previously paid approximately $100 million annually. ABC will broadcast its final three Oscar ceremonies through 2028, concluding a relationship spanning over half a century.
