President Donald Trump offered an upbeat take on his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, predicting it’s “gonna be great for everybody.”
Speaking from Japan on Tuesday, Trump confirmed the “big meeting” is set for Thursday in South Korea. The two will meet on the sidelines of the APEC summit.
This positive spin comes amid a fresh escalation in the trade war. The US has threatened 100% tariffs on Chinese goods, effective November 1.
The threat was a response to China imposing tight export controls on rare earth minerals. The dispute has also seen new US port fees and subsequent countermeasures from Beijing.
“I think it’s going to work out very well,” Trump reiterated, adding that both he and Xi have “a lot to talk about.”
