As global tensions continue to simmer, Australia is stepping up its support for Ukraine with a significant financial commitment aimed at bolstering the Eastern European country’s defense and humanitarian efforts. In a meeting held in New York, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced an additional $60 million aid package during discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
This latest package comprises $45 million allocated for Australian Defence Force equipment, accompanied by $10 million dedicated to Ukraine’s energy support fund and $5 million earmarked for humanitarian assistance. With this contribution, Australia’s total aid to Ukraine since the onset of Russia’s invasion in 2022 will amount to approximately $1.9 billion, underscoring Australia’s commitment to supporting Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict.
In addition to the financial assistance, the two countries have signed a 10-year bilateral security agreement. This agreement aims to enhance military training and explore joint ventures in creating training facilities, as well as the production of air-defense systems, missiles, and drones.
